The idea architects: the scholars behind the ideas

Each tracked idea draws on a recognizable set of scholars. Most of the people who built the ideas are little known outside academia. Many of the names the public knows belong to writers who translated the ideas for a wider audience.

Entries (81 scholars and writers, plus two groups) across five idea families, from 1920s theory to 2020 bestsellers.

Four generations, nearly a century

A similar sequence recurs in most families: theory from the 1930s to the 1970s, a coined term, a generation of scholars who built it into a field, then a few writers and trainers who carried it to the public, most of them between 2010 and 2020.

The thermocline, in one chart

The field’s most-cited scholars mostly write for other academics. Much of the crossing into the mainstream ran through writers with small academic footprints and very large audiences.

Kimberlé Crenshaw 68,315 Patricia Hill Collins 46,718 Gloria Ladson-Billings 43,949 Derald Wing Sue 30,659 Robin DiAngelo 2,329 1.6 million copies of White Fragility (publisher, July 2020) Ibram X. Citations: OpenAlex. OpenAlex undercounts books and does not index workshop handouts, so popular authors’ counts run low; treat them as a rough measure of academic uptake. Sales: Washington Free Beacon, July 2020, citing the publisher; Publishers Weekly, also citing the publisher a few weeks earlier, gives about 1.5 million · Penguin edition of How to Be an Antiracist. Judith Butler (121,494) is left off: her tie to the tracked ideas is indirect.

Where it was builtLaw reviews, then education schools

Critical race theory began in law reviews (Derrick Bell, Kimberlé Crenshaw, Mari Matsuda, Cheryl Harris, Richard Delgado) and was taken up most widely in education research (Gloria Ladson-Billings, Daniel Solórzano, Tara Yosso), which trains teachers and administrators.

Who coined itMost terms trace to an early user

Microaggression: Chester Pierce, 1970. “Institutionalized racism”: Stokely Carmichael, 1966 (essay); “institutional racism”: Carmichael and Charles Hamilton, Black Power, 1967. “White-skin privilege”: Noel Ignatin and Ted Allen, 1967; Peggy McIntosh popularized “white privilege” in 1988. “Identity politics”: the Combahee River Collective, 1977. Intersectionality: Kimberlé Crenshaw, 1989, after Frances Beal’s “double jeopardy” (1969). “White fragility”: Robin DiAngelo, in a 2011 article. “Late capitalism”: Werner Sombart, 1920s, revived by Ernest Mandel in 1972.

Who carried itTranslators and trainers

Ta-Nehisi Coates, Robin DiAngelo, Ibram X. Kendi, Nikole Hannah-Jones and Tema Okun reached far larger audiences than the field’s most-cited scholars. DiAngelo carried a term she had coined herself; Okun, a list she wrote; Coates, Kendi and Hannah-Jones popularized framings that scholars had built.

Land acknowledgmentAustralia, 1976, then a 2017 US guide

Richard Walley’s 1976 Welcome to Country in Perth brought the practice into the Australian mainstream (Australian Geographic). In 2017 the US Department of Arts and Culture urged institutions to adopt it in its “Honor Native Land” guide. Canada’s 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission is often cited as the source, but its 94 Calls to Action do not call for land acknowledgments.

Safe spaceTwo origin stories

One runs through Kurt Lewin’s sensitivity-training groups of the late 1940s (Mind Hacks); the other through 1960s and 1970s women’s groups and gay bars (Dissent). Arao and Clemens’ 2013 “brave space” is a later revision, not the origin.

Equity and democratic socialismA consultant and an organizer

R. Roosevelt Thomas Jr. urged companies to move from affirmative action to “managing diversity” (1990), the step the DEI industry grew from. Michael Harrington co-founded Democratic Socialists of America in 1982; Bernie Sanders carried the label into mainstream politics with his 2015 Georgetown speech. Politicians are noted here, not listed in the roster.

Method and limits

We chose the scholars whose work introduced, built or popularized each tracked idea, using the lineages in each concept file. This is a map of influence on these ideas, not a ranking of anyone’s scholarship. Citation counts are OpenAlex author totals and change daily. OpenAlex splits classic books across many editions, so book authors (Freire, Said, Mandel, Zinn and the popular writers) are undercounted; journal-article authors are counted well. Co-author pairs are shown once, at the first author’s count. Years are first publication in the original language, except where noted. Author records were checked for name mix-ups by field of publication, but the largest totals likely still include duplicate editions or other people’s work: Butler’s profile counts some books more than once, Piketty’s and Saez’s include papers far outside economics, and Foucault’s 232,887 comes from one of several OpenAlex records for him and is unconfirmed. Treat the biggest numbers as upper bounds. Michelle Alexander has no reliable profile. “Coined” means the person named a term now in wide use; DiAngelo both coined and carried her term and is shown as a carrier. “Political economy” replaces “Economics” because Jameson is a cultural theorist. Fifteen entries were added and several roles, titles and dates corrected after a Nov. 5, 2026 audit; their citation counts were not yet available. Only published work and public records are used.
